My Story
My author's journey began in the lovely village of Xedzranawo, in the heart of the Volta Region of Ghana, West Africa. Growing up with my mother living more than 200 kilometres away and my father residing in a distant country, I found solace in the written word. As a child, I penned countless love, complaint, and inquiry letters, pouring my heart onto paper. I discovered the power of self-expression through composing songs and prayers. My journal became my companion, and I shared it with my classmates.
As I advanced in my education, professors recognized my talent and encouraged me to explore writing further. I continued writing and eventually venturing into the world of books.
It was that critical moment when I became a mother for the fourth time that a compelling inspiration struck me. The idea for my first children's book, "The Lizard That Said, Agooo," took root in my spirit in 2015. Yet, it would be seven years before this cherished story materialized into a published work. Less than two years later, life took an unforeseen turn as I received the heart-wrenching news of my mother's passing. It was through the depths of my grief that "I Am Me. I Am One." was born—a beautiful story that took me back to the essence of my nine-year-old self.
"My African Teacher," my third book, emerged as a gift from a sixth-grade classroom I had the privilege to teach in 2022. This dedicated group of students left a lasting mark on my heart, and their unique perspectives and experiences inspired me to capture a significant incident that transpired in our classroom. As a racialized teacher, I found a profound connection with my students, embracing the reciprocal relationship where I wholeheartedly shared with them all that I am, and, in return, they bestowed upon me the vastness of their worlds.
In early 2024, one of the many stories from my children's experiences came to life in the book Never Left, a journey of love, support and becoming. My journey as a mother was rewarded by my son, who has faced his challenges. His love and appreciation toward me gave birth to this title, Never Left.
